As I was putting together the information page for Arizona Traditions, I couldn’t help running into Pickleball and the Arizona Traditions Pickleball Club.
Once upon a time as a reporter for the Sun City Daily News-Sun I had the chance to play multiple sports with the residents of the Northwest Valley’s active adult communities – bocce, lawn bowling, billiards, checkers and a memorable and tragicomic round of golf at Westbrook Village.
But pickleball?
For the uninitiated, pickleball is played on a badminton court using a plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and either wooden or composite paddles. The net on the court is lowered down to ground level and stands 34 inches high. There are rules, naturally, but I’ll leave you to read them for yourself at the USA Pickleball Association’s official website.
Why pickleball? It seems one of the sports inventors owned a cocker spaniel named Pickles whose claim to fame was chasing stray balls and hiding with them in the bushes. (Reminds me of the true story of the town of Snowflake, Arizona – founded by two families, the Snows and the Flakes. Precipitation had nothing to do with it.)
